As if Tokyo wasn’t already a capital of culture clash, they had to go and turn it up a notch at Nakameguro! Here you will find a fusion of contemporary urban living, nature and tradition. I love taking a stroll along the Meguro River, especially in spring when the cherry trees are in blossom, and just soak up the energy of this unique part of a unity city.

Ready to dive into the urban life, nature and tradition of Tokyo

Hostel: Nui

2-4-13 Kuramae, Taito-ku, Tokyo

One of the things I love most about Tokyo is that it is a city that’s in constant flux. The old pours over into the new and clever renovation projects are constantly reinventing public spaces. Like Nui, for example, an Edo-period toy warehouse that is now a hostel! A place where travelers gather from around the globe. The ground floor serves as a café, bar and lounge and the open atmosphere also welcomes casual passersby. A community in and of itself!

Bookshop: Traveler's factory

3-13-10 Kamimeguro, Meguro-ku, Tokyo

The Traveler’s Factory is a great bookshop in one of the back alleys of Nakameguro; it actually used to be a paper factory! The downstairs Traveler’s Notebook with its travel-themed books and stationery is the ideal place to plan your next trip. And the upstairs bar and café is the ideal place to talk about it with fellow travelers. You might even find me there relaxing in the super-comfy sofa!

Lunch: Aoya

1-15-10 Aobadai, Meguro-ku, Tokyo

Aoya dishes up Kyoto-style home cooking and Japanese sweets. Many of the ingredients are shipped in directly from Kyoto and are served in a beautifully renovated, traditional old home. The perfect setting for a relaxed dining experience. My personal favorite is the homemade curry with stacks of veggies. Other mouth-watering dishes include the seasonal Kyoto-style medicinal set and their original Aoya spicy hot pot.

Nut shop: Groovy Nuts

Higashiyama AT Bldg. 102, Higashiyama, Meguro-ku, Tokyo

If you go nuts for nuts, you most go to Groovy Nuts… It’s like nothing you’ve ever tasted before, I guarantee! Over twenty varieties of nuts line the shelves in glass jars, all sold by weight. And if you can’t make up your mind, try a mix of their four original flavors (original-roasted, bacon-smoked, honey-roasted, cocoa-coated) all of which are slow-roasted daily, right here in the store. Or if you are just thirsty, grab a nut smoothie or a bowl of nut soup!

Park: Saigoyama Park

2-10-28 Aobadai, Meguro-ku, Tokyo

Armed with my roasted nuts and nut smoothie, a relaxing stroll in the park is well in order! Having a place like this within walking distance is one of the luxuries of Nakameguro. Nothing beats lying on the grass and reading a book without having to keep an eye on the clock. Spending a whole day in a crowded city can be draining, so this kind of down-time is precious! Now, where to next…?

Why is it that you only start to appreciate authentic Japanese culture when you grow older? These days, I am all into bonsai... No doubt my grandfather instilled something in me that was just crying to get out all these years. And so I bought a tree and added a little extra peace and joy in my daily life. The calming interior of the shop not only displays a wide variety of bonsai but many other beautiful things as well, all capturing the essence of Japan. I’m definitely coming back to purchase that teapot next time.
