Most comfy bed in the world @Volkshotel

Hotel: Volkshotel

150 Wibautstraat, 1091 GR, Amsterdam

Being such a hub for contemporary design, it was only a matter of time before Amsterdam East got its first design hotel! The Volkshotel occupies the former site of one of the Netherlands’ largest newspapers. From the Werkplaats café on the ground floor to the rooftop restaurant, nightclub and private hot tubs, this place truly has it all.

Breakfast: Boterham

2 Andreas Bonnstraat, 1091 AX, Amsterdam

Today Amsterdam East is by far the hippest neighborhood in town. And true to the form of its setting, right across the road from the Amsterdam School of Fashion, you have to try Boterham: a hybrid concept store combining coffee, cake and home deco, all in one. Be sure to try their homemade egg salad sandwich. My personal favorite for breakfast, lunch and tea!

Bikes: Holland Rent a Bike

247 Damrak, 1012 ZJ, Amsterdam

There are more bicycles in Amsterdam than there are people. So it should come as little surprise that this is by far the fastest, safest and most enjoyable way to get around. Holland Rent a Bike, in the former stock exchange building near Amsterdam Central Station is the best option for rentals. Don’t worry about your killer haircut, helmets aren’t mandatory ;-).

Department store: De Bijenkorf

1 Dam, 1012 JS, Amsterdam

Looking for the latest Eastpak collection? Chances are they’ll have it in De Bijenkorf. A veritable “beehive” of fashion, beauty and design goodies on several floors. One of the city’s best kept secrets, however, would have to be this department store’s rooftop terrace. It’s where I go to relax and refresh in between shopping sprees!

Vintage: We Are Vintage

43 Eerste van Swindenstraat, 1093 GC, Amsterdam

There is surely nothing more satisfying than finding a true fashion gem in between piles of vintage clothing. We Are Vintage is the only vintage store in Amsterdam East. And what makes it even more special is that you buy your clothes by the kilo! The tag indicates whether the particular garment before you is €10, €20 or €30 per kilo. I picked up an amazing leather skirt here not so long ago. Super cheap and super fun!

Market: Dappermarkt

Dapperstraat, 1093 BS, Amsterdam

After all that vintage shopping, you’ll need some typical Dutch food to refuel. The Dappermarkt is a traditional Dutch market crawling with locals doing their grocery shopping. This market sells almost everything; from clothes to fresh fish, to flowers and last but not least stroopwafels (sirup wafels), must-try when you are in Amsterdam!

Boutique: Div.

8 Javastraat, 1094 HG, Amsterdam

The Javastraat in Amsterdam East is hot! Recent years many new shops, cafés and restaurants popped up on this lively and multi-cultural street. And for you men, Div. would have to be one of the coolest. The name is short for diverse and that’s exactly what this store is: shop here for anything from Swiss army knives to Japanese denim, and everything in between.

Clothing: Hartje Oost

23 Javastraat, Amsterdam

A little further up the same eclectic Javastraat, lies ‘Hartje Oost’. And my advice to you ladies, is to come for the fashion but stay for the coffee. Hartje Oost specializes in both: with a uniquely feminine collection made up of mainly Dutch and Scandinavian brands and an equally unique selection of some of the world’s finest coffees. I particularly love their lemonades!

Lunch: Walter’s - The Walter Woodbury Bar

42 Javastraat, 1094 HJ, Amsterdam

This all-day café/all-night restaurant is a talking point amongst Amsterdam’s hippest and trendiest. Of course, the sun-drenched outdoor patio may just have something to do with that! But I think I love the interior design the most: industrial with a mix of colonial Indonesian. A great spot to meet up with friends for lunch or a drink.

Concept store: CP113

113 Czaar Peterstraat, 1018 PE, Amsterdam

CP113 is short for Czaar Peterstraat 113 which is short for Check this Place out! Stop by for men’s and women’s fashion, vintage furniture and indie jewelry. Or even just for the cute coffee corner if – like me – you can’t do without your regular booster shot of caffeine.

Aperitivo: Amsterdam Roest

1 Jacob Bontiusplaats, 1018 PL, Amsterdam

The original and still the best! Amsterdam Roest was one of the first of what are now numerous city beaches in Amsterdam. Where else can you wile away an afternoon with a drink in your hand and your feet in the sand? The former industrial backdrop only adds to the eclectic atmosphere. An interesting spot with its Sunday markets by day, while at night, Amsterdam Roest lights up with epic club nights that pull quite a crowd.

Coffee: Coffee Bru

14-H Beukenplein, 1091 KG, Amsterdam

The trip back to the totally revamped Beukenplein, is riddled with iconic scenes that seem lifted straight out of a movie. After a 10 minute bike ride it’s time for some refreshment. Coffee Bru is without a doubt the best specialty coffee bar in the neighborhood!

Restaurant: Bar Brouw

17 Beukenplein, 1092 BA, Amsterdam

One of my favorite places in Amsterdam for a cheap eat would have to be Bar Brouw. This place is a magnet for meat lovers with its unashamedly carnivorous menu featuring classics such as pulled pork, brisket and spareribs. All washed down of course with an amazing selection of craft beers. I love looking at the label designs on all the bottles!

Bar: Canvas op de 7e

150 Wibautstraat, 1091 GR, Amsterdam

As the name suggests, Canvas op de 7e is located on the 7th floor of the Volkshotel, which means it affords incredible views over Amsterdam East. A great spot for drinks with an equally good food menu. I have to say, life feels pretty good while watching the sun go down here with a bottle of bubbly on ice. Canvas op de 7e turns into a nightclub after 11pm, attracting a cool mix of hipsters and hotel guests until the early hours of the morning.
